Guidelines for the project proposal

The quality of the PhD project proposal is the main criterion for assessment in PLATO’s call for 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs).

What to include in the proposal

  • The topic
  • The research questions, justified by relevant theory and literature
  • Choice of research methods
  • Describe your independent contribution to the main project
  • Timeline for the project
  • Literature list

Total length (all included): 2,000-3,000 words

Assessment of the proposal

The project proposal is required to demonstrate good academic quality. You must also show that the project is sufficiently well planned as to make it possible to complete within the given time frame.

In assessing quality, PLATO will be looking for:

  • Originality in the form of scientific innovation and/or development of new knowledge
  • Familiarity with the research issue and documented knowledge of key research within the field
  • Clarity of research questions and/or hypotheses
  • Methodological feasibility; operationalization and use of relevant scientific methods and analyses
  • Suitability of the individual project for the overall research question
