For supervisors and PhDs
Trainers: Alison Mitchell and Katie Wheat, Vitae
Participants will take stock of the supervision teams after the first year and prepare for the PhD's research stays with co-supervisors that will take place from October 2018. The session will address the principles agreed in PLATO's Supervision Charter. Have the PhDs and supervisors found the right balance in their supervisory relationship and what actions could be taken to move the relationships forward from here?

Part II: 12.30-16.00
For supervisors
Trainers: Alison Mitchell and Katie Wheat, Vitae
Participants will discuss experiences and best practice of supervision with a view to providing a research environment where PhDs can thrive.
The workshop will address some of the dilemmas facing researchers in their role as supervisors and will support the participants in developing competences as mentors to apply to the supervisory relationship. Through a facilitated round table discussion, participants will address questions such as: How to enable PhD candidates to take ownership of their projects and their own professional development? How to strike the balance between direction versus independence? How to deal with conflicting interests? When and how to discuss possible co-authorship?
